What exactly do I mean by the term a true business mentality? Can this be taught or is it something that a person is simply born with?
To be honest, it is usually the latter that is most prevalent here: you either have a true business mentality or not. This is something that lives within your very own personality and there are some people on this planet that will never make good business people.
If you evaluate any large business nowadays, e.g. GDS International, you will soon be able to recognise the people within the organisation that are born to lead and those that are born to follow. This is a fundamental facet of human nature.
Where a person is naturally born to follow, it can be a real uphill struggle to become a leader. They can take all the business courses in the world, but for the most part, it is unlikely that they would be able to completely re-mould their whole personality.
Many people believe that a true business mentality can be found in strong individuals who never waver from their level of professionalism. To conceive a business and ensure that it remains viable, you really have to make sure you keep your eye on the ball at all times. All industries adapt over time and competitors are always just around the corner: it is remaining abreast of these adversities that identifies those with a real business mentality and those that are unfortunately lacking in this regard.
