Dressing for a New Office

If you are about to start your first job and you are not entirely sure how to dress appropriately, you will want to ensure that you do a little research before you arrive at the office. Dressing for business is not an exact science, and different businesses expect different levels of formality from their employees.

To begin with, you will want to determine what the dress code is in your new office. If you received any new employee documentation when you accepted the job, the chances are good that this paperwork will include details about how to attire yourself correctly.

However, if no dress code has been officially stipulated, your safest option is to discreetly contact someone from the personnel department and ask them for the necessary information. There is very little worse than hitting the wrong note on your first day. Arriving in jeans to an office where suits are compulsory is tantamount to purchasing affordable wedding favors for a friend's ceremony and then finding out these are damaged; awkward and extremely uncomfortable.

Remember also that office dress code varies from business to business. Use your training to help you to determine what kind of attire is expected of you. If you are working in an agricultural office, for example, the chances are good that you won't be required to wear a tie or suit, however, if you are an investment banker, it is likely that you will.

Determining dress code is an important and often tricky business when you are starting a new job. Remember that if you have no idea it is always useful to ask.
